Planning a trip to Austria

Best season

The Alpine season runs from roughly May to October. The Grossglockner and other high toll roads open once the snow is cleared (usually early May) and close for winter. June and September offer great riding with fewer crowds than the July–August peak.

Roads & terrain

Predominantly Alpine: smooth, well-maintained mountain roads with long sequences of hairpins and high passes, plus gentler riding through lake districts and valleys. Surfaces are excellent by European standards.

Formalities & tolls

Austria is in the EU and Schengen. A motorway vignette is required to use the autobahn/expressway network (motorcycles need their own vignette), and several spectacular mountain roads (e.g. Grossglockner) charge a separate toll. Check current vignette and toll rules before you ride.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Grossglockner High Alpine Road open?

Typically from early May to late October/early November, depending on snow. It is closed at night and in winter.

When is the best time to ride in Austria?

May to October, with June and September giving the best balance of open passes, good weather and lighter traffic.
