Planning a trip to Romania

Best season

The high passes open only in summer: the Transfăgărășan is typically open from around late June/July to October. Lower roads are rideable from spring to autumn.

Roads & terrain

Dramatic Carpathian mountain roads with endless hairpins, plus quieter rural routes. Main roads are good; some rural surfaces and edges can be rough, and animals on the road are common.

Formalities & tolls

Romania is in the EU and recently joined the Schengen area. A road vignette (rovinieta) is generally required for the main road network. Confirm current vignette and Schengen border rules before travelling.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Transfăgărășan open to motorcycles?

Usually from around late June/July to October, depending on snow. It is closed over winter at the high section.

Do motorcycles need a vignette (rovinieta) in Romania?

A road vignette is generally required to use the national road network — check the current rules and how to buy one for a motorcycle.

Transfăgărășan or Transalpina — which is better?

Both are spectacular: the Transfăgărășan is more famous and busier, the Transalpina is higher and often quieter. Many riders do both.
