Planning a trip to Spain

Best season

Spring and autumn are ideal almost everywhere. Summer is excellent in the northern mountains but can be punishingly hot inland and in the south. The Pyrenees ride best from June to October.

Roads & terrain

Hugely varied: high Pyrenean passes, sweeping coastal roads, fast empty meseta highways and tight technical roads in the southern sierras. Surfaces are generally very good.

Formalities & tolls

Spain is in the EU and Schengen. Some motorways (autopistas, “AP”) are tolled while others (autovías, “A”) are free. Carry the usual EU documents. Confirm current toll and equipment rules before travelling.
